From communication, neuroscience to typologies of high-conflict personalities, learn how to respond, and set limits on, behaviour with renowned conflict resolution expert, Professor Tania Sourdin.

This cross-jurisdictional workshop provides attendees with practical training in facilitation and conflict management techniques. Scenario based role play, with trained coaches and actors Georgia Bolton and Ian Rose, and skills-based exercises will focus on responding effectively to the challenges which can be presented by high-conflict behaviours in the court/tribunal room especially self-represented litigants.

Professor Tania Sourdin PhD, LLM, BA, LLB
Professor Tania Sourdin is the Dean of the University of Newcastle Law School. In the past two decades, she has conducted qualitative and quantitative research projects into aspects of the dispute resolution and justice system systems in 12 Courts and Tribunals and six external dispute resolution schemes within Australia. Other research has focused on therapeutic justices, self-represented litigants, restorative justice, justice innovation, technology, delay and systemic reforms. In 2003 and 2005 she was the Chief Investigator on two Australian Research Council projects that explored the use of artificial intelligence in the legal domain. Since that time she has had a number of projects that have explored the use of AI in the justice system and the role of a human judge in terms of court engagement and collaboration. Recently, Professor Sourdin completed the 6th edition of her book “Alternative Dispute Resolution” (Thomson Reuters) and has focussed on Judges and AI and has published papers such as “Judge v Robot” (2018), chapters that include “Must a Judge be Human?”(2018) and books – “The Responsive Judge” (Springer, 2018), “The Multi Tasking Judge” (Thomson Reuters, 2012). She recently completed a co authored book on “Digital Technology and Justice : Justice Apps” (Routledge, 2020) and her book “Judges, Technology and AI” was published 2021 (Edward Elgar). Professor Sourdin is the author of a number of more than 140 publications that are focussed on justice reform issues and has published and presented widely on a range of topics including ADR, justice innovation, self represented litigants, high conflict behaviour, justice issues, mediation, conflict resolution, collaborative law, artificial intelligence, technology and organisational change. She has also retained a part time practice focus and has worked for more than 30 years as a lawyer, 25 years in various senior part time tribunal positions and as a mediator and has since 2014 been the National Broadband Network industry dispute resolution advisor within Australia.

Georgia Bolton
Georgia is an actor, coach and facilitator with a psychology background. She has successfully pursued a long-term career in the global corporate environment, while accepting a variety of roles in Australian and American TV and film. Presently delivering to a broad range of global clients, through online platforms, Georgia’s work spans across all time zones. Previously her work has taken her to Delhi, North America, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand, fueling a passion for travel and cultural exploration. Key areas of interest are communicating with presence, diversity and inclusion, mental health awareness and well being conversations. Georgia has 3 young children and resides in an idyllic small town in country Victoria.

Ian Rose
Ian Rose is an accomplished actor, writer, facilitator and consultant. His work is fueled by a belief in the power of high quality connections to build the best versions of individuals, teams and organisations. Ian cut his teeth as a corporate actor back in London twenty years ago, working across legal, financial, medical and retail sectors in the creation of realistic simulations of challenging conversations, and coaching around the behaviours that enable their effective management and positive resolution. Since moving to Australia in 2007, Ian has built a career and reputation as a facilitator and coach who delivers highly engaging, interactive and inspiring learning experiences. He has partnered with a diverse range of organisations, in Australia and overseas, from financial, medical and pharmaceutical, telecommunication and media sectors through to high street retail and emergency services, taking in construction, engineering, education, law and both local and federal government. Ian has a wealth of experience delivering programs – from shop floor to C-suite – on communicating and presenting with impact, conflict resolution, leadership through storytelling, realising inclusivity, coaching for success, and much more. His BA with first class Joint Honours from the University of Manchester was followed by Post-Graduate studies in Performance at Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, and Adult Education at International House, London. He holds a TAE Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment, has worked with a myriad of established models and diagnostics (DiSC, Bolton and Bolton, GROW etc) and is accredited in Emotional Intelligence tool EQi 2.0. Ian is an IACC accredited Life Coach.
