Family Violence Lead Magistrates are appointed by the Chief Magistrate to ‘champion’ the understanding of family violence at their respective court. Family Violence Lead Magistrates work to provide a fair, efficient and effective service in all family violence related proceedings, including intervention orders and criminal proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, the Children’s Court as well as family law proceedings.
The Family Violence Lead Magistrates operate within a demanding, complex and sensitive environment and the role requires a sound knowledge of the legal and social aspects of family violence together with the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with court user agencies, community-based services and individuals involved in the family violence sector.
To meet these unique needs, the Judicial College organises educational workshops for the Lead Family Violence Magistrates, which aim to provide a forum for the Lead Family Violence Magistrates to discuss their family violence work and court practice with the aim of ensuring consistency and better practice across the Magistrates’ Court.
