Chief Justice Debra Mortimer sworn-in as first female Chief Justice of Federal Court of Australia.

The Honourable Justice Debra Mortimer has been officially sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, becoming the first woman to hold this position since the Court's establishment in 1976.

The ceremonial sitting of the Federal Court of Australia was held on April 17th to mark Chief Justice Mortimer's appointment.

At the ceremony, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus praised Chief Justice Mortimer's "distinguished and illustrious career," highlighting her flexibility and dynamism in interpreting legal matters. Chief Justice Mortimer has been serving on the Federal Court since July 2013, based in Melbourne, and was previously a Senior Counsel at the Victorian Bar. She also remains a Senior Fellow at Melbourne Law School and a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Comparative Constitutional Studies.

The Judicial College of Victoria extends its warm congratulations to Chief Justice Mortimer on her appointment.
