Coronavirus Legislation Amendments

The College has updated our summary of changes made by the emergency coronavirus legislation to reflect recently-passed amendments.

The COVID-19 Omnibus (Emergency Measures) and Other Acts Amendment Act 2020 (Vic) extends the operational provisions of changes made by the original emergency legislation to 26 April 2021 and makes further amendments.

Most significantly, although the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services now has expanded powers to appoint authorised officers, no officer appointed under these temporary powers may exercise any of the emergency powers, including the power to detain or restrict the movement of any person.

This summary is part of the Judicial College’s range of resources designed to help judicial officers tackle the coronavirus crisis. Visit our Coronavirus Resources page.
