This twilight will provide judicial officers with an insight into Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Occurring in all parts of Australian society where alcohol is consumed, FASD has lifelong consequences and is costly to our health, education, disability and justice systems.
Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist, Dr Carmella Pestell will provide a comprehensive overview from the clinical perspective covering the diagnostic challenges and the impact of living with a diagnosis. Following her extensive research in WA and NT, Dr Pestell assisted in the implementation of Victoria’s first FASD multi-disciplinary clinic launched in Shepparton in July 2019.
Drawing on her findings from the recent Inquest into Thirteen Deaths of Children and Young Persons in the Kimberley Region, Western Australian State Coroner Ros Fogliani will explore some of the devastating effects FASD has on an individual and the wider community and how judicial officers can improve engagement with individuals and families affected by FASD.
The 2019 Koori series on trauma is supported by the Judicial Officers Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Committee.
