Western Australian courts and tribunals unite for historic reconciliation statement.

Headshot
In an Australian first, the heads of jurisdiction of all Western Australian courts and tribunals convened a special joint sitting during Reconciliation Week to launch the Western Australian Courts and Tribunals Reconciliation Statement - an incredibly powerful statement of regret and reconciliation.

The historic gathering highlighted the justice system's commitment to acknowledging and addressing the historical relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The heads of jurisdiction expressed regret for past barriers and over-representation of Indigenous peoples in the justice system, pledging to collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to improve access and foster respectful relationships.

Chief Justice Peter Quinlan stated,

"It is a commitment by all Western Australian courts and tribunals to ensuring access to justice in a culturally sensitive and culturally safe manner."
