The Sentencing Advisory Council has released Sentencing Snapshots for six sex offences sentenced in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria:
- sexual assault
- persistent sexual abuse of a child aged under 16
- indecent act with or in the presence of a child aged under 16
- sexual penetration of a child aged 12 to under 16
- sexual penetration of a child aged under 12
The new Snapshots highlight sentencing trends in the five years to 30 June 2020. They present data on the type and length of sentences imposed for the principal offence (the most serious offence in a case).
This is the first set of Sentencing Snapshots to distinguish sentencing outcomes where a standard sentence applied. Five of the six offences are standard sentence offences. A standard sentence is a ‘numerical guidepost’ that courts consider when sentencing a standard sentence offence.
