The Hon Justice Simon Steward and the Hon Justice Jacqueline Gleeson have been appointed to the Hight Court of Australia. Justice Steward will take Justice Nettle's place on the bench on 1 December 2020, while Justice Gleeson will take Justice Bell's place on March 1, 2021.
Justice Steward graduated from the University of Melbourne Law School in 1991 with First Class Honours. His Honour subsequently completed a Masters of Law at the same university.
From 1991 to 1999, Justice Steward was employed as a solicitor at Mallesons Stephen Jaques working in its tax group. In 1999 his Honour was called to the Victorian Bar where he practiced almost exclusively in revenue law. In 2009 Justice Steward took silk and for two years was the President of the Tax Bar Association of the Victorian Bar.
Justice Steward is a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School where he teaches in the Masters program.
Justice Gleeson was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia in April 2014. Her Honour is located in the Sydney Registry of the Court and is a Registry Coordinating judge and duty judge in the Commercial & Corporations National Practice Areas of the Court.
Her Honour has Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from the University of Sydney. She was admitted to practise as a solicitor in New South Wales in 1990 and as a barrister in 1991. In 2000, her Honour left the Bar to become General Counsel at the Australian Broadcasting Authority and later a Senior Executive Lawyer for the Australian Government Solicitor. Her Honour returned to the Bar in 2007 and became Senior Counsel in 2012.
Her Honour is a member of the National Judicial Orientation Program Steering Committee of the National Judicial College of Australia.
