The Honourable Chris Maxwell AC to deliver inaugural Paul Mullaly History and Law Lecture.

Justice Chris Maxwell
Join the Hon. Chris Maxwell AC for an engaging lecture on the Colonial foundations of criminal justice in Victoria at the inaugural Paul Mullaly History and Law Lecture during Law Week 2023.

Hosted by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, this lecture series was established in honour of long-serving member His Honour Paul Mullaly QC, who contributed significantly to the society's work, including his transcription and annotation of Judge Willis' Port Phillip Casebooks.

During the lecture, the Hon. Chris Maxwell will highlight the importance of legal history in understanding present-day legal and social issues. Using Paul Mullaly's "Crime in the Port Phillip District 1835-51" as a foundation, the lecture will delve into key aspects of criminal justice in Colonial Victoria, including the role of the trial judge, early ideas about proof and punishment, and the intricacies of jury trials.

The event will take place both in person and on Zoom on Tuesday, May 16, at 5:30 pm. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment, with prices ranging from $10 to $20.
