Chief Magistrate Lisa Hannan elevated to the Supreme Court.

In recognition of the significant demands of the Chief Magistrate’s role, Chief Magistrate Hannan has been appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria as a dual commission holder, effective 29 March 2022.

The changes introduced by the Justice Legislation Amendment (Criminal Procedure Disclosure and Other Matters) Act 2022 allow for the Chief Magistrate to concurrently hold both the office of Chief Magistrate and the office of Supreme Court judge.

These amendments give the office of Chief Magistrate equivalence of seniority with the Heads of Jurisdiction of other generalist courts and tribunals, namely the Chief Judge and the President of VCAT.

The Honourable Lisa Hannan was appointed Chief Magistrate in September 2019, after serving with distinction as a judge of the County Court of Victoria since 2006. Prior to her appointment to the County Court, Chief Magistrate Hannan served as a magistrate and coroner for eight years.

The College looks forward to continuing to work closely with Chief Magistrate Hannan in the years ahead.
