Monash University to host conference on emerging challenges in sexual assault trials.

Monash University, in collaboration with the Victorian Juries Commissioner's Office and the Court of the Future Network, will host a one-day conference on 'Emerging challenges in the management of sexual assault trials' on 9 June 2023 at Monash University Law Chambers.

The conference aims to explore the difficulties that arise in prosecuting sexual assault cases and to develop new ideas for enhancing the system.

The conference will cover the entire sexual assault trial process, from initial investigation to post-verdict aftermath. It will also address practitioner ethics, courtroom venue, the impact of current processes on complainants, and the role of technology in improving sexual assault trials.

The conference boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, including Deputy Chief Judge Meryl Sexton of the County Court of Victoria, Detective Sergeant Katrina Carr of Specialist Investigations Training in Queensland, Professor Andres Harfuch of the University of Argentina, journalist and victim advocate Nina Funnell, Forensic Psychiatrist Dr Danny Sullivan, and Matthew Weatherson of the Judicial College of Victoria.
