The office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) has published the sixth edition of the "Sentencing of federal offenders in Australia: a guide for practitioners."

The guide provides an outline of the law related to the sentencing of federal offenders in Australia, including persons being dealt with for offences against the laws of the Commonwealth. It is intended to be a valuable resource not only for CDPP lawyers, but also for other legal practitioners, judicial officers, court staff, and anyone who deals with the sentencing of federal offenders throughout Australia.

The sixth edition, updated by Des Lane of the Victorian Bar, reflects the law as at 1 February 2023. The guide aims to provide assistance in understanding the complexities of federal sentencing laws, including the latest developments in case law, and includes new and significantly revised sections. These cover mandatory sentencing requirements for certain Commonwealth child sex and child sexual abuse offences, as well as recent developments in case law regarding probable hardship to family or dependents as a sentencing consideration.
