Ensuring a safe working environment in the courts

News Date:

Media release from the Judicial College of Victoria in response to the Wellbeing of the Victorian Bar Report

An overwhelming majority of barristers are satisfied with the quality of their working life, according to the Victorian Bar’s first ever 2018 Wellbeing of the Victorian Bar Survey. However, of the more than 850 barristers who responded, one in six pointed to judicial conduct as an aspect that could be improved, with 59% of barristers reporting that they had experienced or witnessed judicial bullying.

This is an issue the Judicial College of Victoria takes seriously. Just like any workplace, courts must be safe environments for all who work in them – judicial officers, court staff, lawyers including barristers, as well as a vast array of other professionals.
