Are you ready for the Serious Offenders Act changes?

News Date:
03/09/2018

The Serious Offenders Act 2018 commences today, introducing new laws for supervision and detention of some serious offenders, including serious violence offenders.

Emergency detention orders and an intensive treatment and supervision condition are among new options for courts.

The new Act also makes minor changes to the qualifying offences, the core conditions of supervision orders, and the interaction between supervision order conditions and other restrictive orders, such as family violence intervention orders.

It implements a final round of recommendations from the Harper review into Victoria’s post-sentence regime and replaces the Serious Sex Offenders (Detention and Supervision) Act 2009, which had been the subject of many amendments in recent years.
