New Chief Justice and Chair of the Judicial College Appointed

News Date:

The Judicial College welcomes the appointment of the Honourable Justice Anne Ferguson as the next Chief Justice of Victoria and Chair of the Judicial College of Victoria. Justice Ferguson will become Victoria's twelfth Chief Justice when the Honourable Marilyn Warren AC leaves the Supreme Court in early October 2017.

Justice Ferguson was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2010 and to the Court of Appeal in 2014. Prior to her appointment as a judge, Justice Ferguson was a partner at law firm Allens Arthur Robinson, working in insolvency and commercial litigation.

Justice Ferguson is the first solicitor to be appointed Chief Justice and the second woman in the role.

We want to also pay tribute to the dedication of Chief Justice Warren who served the Board and the Judicial College for 14 years. Reflecting on Chief Justice Warren’s retirement CEO Samantha Burchell said, ‘we will miss her Honour’s authentic and passionate advocacy for learning in the judiciary; and her fine leadership that recognises the importance of judicial education, particularly as a means for achieving excellence and change’.

Earlier this year, the Judicial College launched ‘Masters of our Fate’ a new strategic direction for the College to support the educational needs of the Victorian judiciary over the next eight years.

We look forward to working with Justice Ferguson, and other members of our Board, in the coming years to realise the ambitious goals of ‘Masters of our Fate’.
