Our Future

Classroom showing presenter and two judicial officers
College program

Our work so far has laid an important foundation. Judicial education is fast becoming an active part of life for every judicial officer in Victoria. And, in the future, judicial education will continue to create a highly skilled judiciary, improve judicial wellbeing, enrich judicial practice, and support the government’s vision for a modern, unified and engaged court system.

Judicial practice must keep pace with social, technological and legal change.
Our immediate focus is to consolidate and continue our activities to an ever-higher standard, and to explore ways to better support emerging jurisdiction-specific needs of the courts and VCAT.

Three key challenges for the College are to:

  1. maintain existing activities while creating the platform for growth-within existing resources
  2. gauge the impacts of the College’s work
  3. better communicate the activities and value of the College to government, the broader legal community and public, and, as a result, identify new learning opportunities. The College is a key to strengthening a two-way community engagement process between the community and the judiciary.

Over the medium to longer term, the College aims to:

  • expand the Continuing Professional Development scheme to meet the full five days of the National Standard for Professional Development
  • improve support and wellbeing for judicial officers, whose career is demanding, complex and, at times, isolating and stressful
  • improve the technology that supports the College’s programs and services
  • introduce a model that responds to jurisdiction-specific professional development needs for all Courts and VCAT
  • establish new and dedicated judicial education facilities.

Our Vision

Ultimately, our vision is to become an exemplar of best practice in judicial education-a “university for judicial officers”-and the principal and preeminent provider of education and professional development for Victorian judicial officers. We want to provide our services in dedicated, state-of-the-art facilities, and create courses and study opportunities in multiple fields, supported by both legal educators and professorial judicial officers.
